Raceytay "makes photographs" that take you into another world, one where the forest floor is covered with a blanket of red or where the sky is aglow with twinkling lights and a fairytale sliver moon. The pictures speak for themselves and I hope you find her work as inspiring as I do.
While her art is reminiscent of southwestern native american art with her use of colors and lines, it has an imaginative element that reminds me of children's stories such as "The Mitten," one of my personal favorites. She hails from London, UK but originated from Germany, where she "walked across the rainbow, lived in the tops of evergreen trees and flew with the birds. I slept under a blanket of twinkling stars and swam in deep black lakes at night (or something like that)." All I know is that her work is inspiring and brought me back to my childhood, the best of it.
It doesn't have to make sense, it doesn't even have to be beautiful, it just has to speak to me in one way or another. Jacqueline's art speaks to me, some of it is calming, while some of it inspires me to go create, it invokes certain feelings and moods, it is at the same time extremely beautiful. One can see how her inspiration is derived from nature because the colors and movements she uses make you feel like you're looking at something in nature, whether it be a sunset or a swirling river. It's very inspiring! Stephanie, the owner and creative mind behind Gloucester Street Paperie has an eye for design. Her cards, journals, and ornaments remind me of good ole' historic NewEngland. There's a warmth and a familiarity behind the designs that makes them the perfect thing to send to a family member or loved one to show them how special they are.

So without further adieux, here is the interview!

GABRIELLE: Where do you get your inspiration from?

STEPHANIE: My inspiration comes from the beauty of nature. As a girl who likes to travel, I enjoy the many natural sites this earth has to offer, so it's no wonder my products reflect that. I especially love earth tones and floral blossoms.

GABRIELLE: Do you have a job outside of Etsy?

STEPHANIE: I am a full-time college student, so that's basically my "job" at this point in my life. I work part-time at Panera Bread 10 hours a week just to make a little extra money. At this point in my life, I feel like I am on a runway waiting in line knowing at anytime my plane of life will take off soon.

GABRIELLE: How did you come into your profession?

STEPHANIE: Studying law was not what I planned on doing while groing up. I was encouraged to pick a major that was a "typical job": 9 to 5 office job that pays well and will always be in need.

GABRIELLE: Is this what you imagined you would be when you grew up? If not, what did you want to be when you were little?

STEPHANIE: Life is never what you expect it to be. I have a lifetime passion for food! I love cooking! I always wanted to go to pastry school in New York City and become a pastry chef. When the door closed on that dream, I researched occupations on the Internet for something I would be interested in doing. Seeing that I am a very partiotic American and love everything about how the USA came into being, law seemed like the route to go. In high school, I saw myself going far away to college and majoring in Political Science. When looking for colleges, I got so overwhemed by all the different schools. I kinda dropped the ball on the college search and ended up at a local private college doing law. I absolutely love my school! I have to confess I am totally shocked at how much I love it considering how much I was not so enthusiastic about it before hand. It's not like I didn't want to go, but was just kinda like, "eh, whatever!"

GABRIELLE: What's your favorite snack/drink to keep you going during a long day?

STEPHANIE: My long days are spent on campus, so orange Gatorade and Frosted Mini Wheats are my go-to snacks to make it thorugh the day: easy to carry and can be eaten in the classrooms!

GABRIELLE: What is your favorite item in your shop?
STEPHANIE: My favorite item in my shop would have to be the Hydrangea Birthday Card.

GABRIELLE: How did you get the idea for your favorite item?

STEPHANIE: Hydrangeas are my favorite flowers, so I just had to create something with hydrangeas. I'm on this kick now with using pages out of a vintage book in my designs. It adds so much character, and it went really well with the mettallic blossoms and the watercolor details on the finished card.

GABRIELLE: If there was one place you could live and money wasn't an option where would it be?

STEPHANIE: That's an easy one: Williamsburg, Va in a cute colonial box house! Being the patriotic American I am, Colonial Williamsburg is my favorite city, and I would love to move there the instant the opportunity would arise! I love the architecture and all the American history the city represents.

GABRIELLE: If you had a million dollars how would you spend it?

STEPHANIE: If someone were to hand me one million dollars, I would use it to open my dream business: a combined coffee shop, restaurant, and eatery. I'm actually in a business plan writing course right now, and that is my business I am writing my plan on. That money would really make this dream a reality!

GABRIELLE: Do you believe in God? This can be a yes or no, or it can be a more elaborate answer, you can also choose not to answer it, if it is too personal.

STEPHANIE: I not only believe in God, but also I am a born-again Christian. I asked God to forgive my sins back in third grade and have been a growing Christian ever since. God plays a part in my life everyday by bestowing His unfathomable grace and mercy on me. I am ever thankful to Him for it! My life would seriously be in shambles if I did not have my Hope and my Rock.

GABRIELLE: Do you feel like a part of you is visible in all of your work?

STEPHANIE: A part of me is always visible in my work. My work reflects my style and what I value. I tend to have more sophisticated tastes and love anything that has glitter or is shiney! I also try to add beauty into everyday life thorugh my items. I believe we should make the most of everyday we are given, so I always create items that are above and beyond "the norm" or expectations.

GABRIELLE: Do you miss items when they sell?

STEPHANIE: I can say that I don't miss items when they sell because I create them to make someone else's day a little better. So when an item sells, I'm extremely happy that I am fulfilling my purpose!

GABRIELLE: Where is your favorite place to shop on Etsy?

STEPHANIE: Etsy has so many great products it's hard to say. I tend to browse through the accessories, purses and ceramics categories most often. A lot of the times I stumble into some favorite sellers that are featured on the front page or in a Storque Blog article.

Visit Stephanie at www.GloucesterStreet.etsy.com!

Gabrielle Knighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720378972458268198noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3343591488735927170.post-49223312628462891482010-02-10T10:31:00.000-08:002010-02-10T10:58:22.803-08:00I am ready for Spring and Sergers!Who else is ready for spring? We're getting anywhere from 6-12 inches of snow today here in RI and while I usually love snow and enjoy playing in it, I'm feeling like I need to see the sun and feel the warmth of it. I'm anxious to plant my garden and watch my veggies and herbs grow and not have to put on 20 layers everytime I step outside. Winters are long in New England, a little too long some years. Besides that, I am working on a bunch of new stuff for my etsy store and my new serger is really helping me along. I love sergers they are seriously one of the best inventions ever made for one-woman sewing operations like myself. Also I would just like to say, to all those who complain about threading the thing, READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL FIRST BEFORE YOU TOUCH ANYTHING, and then it's really not that hard. It took me 15 mins to figure it out the first time, stop being lazy ad do some reading! Because sergers are an awesome invention and it would be a pity if you, being a sewer, never tried one or bought one because you thought the threading would be too difficult or time consuming because it's not. All the reviews I read said, "Oh it's so hard to thread it" almost every one of the 190 reviews said something about threading the lower looper. And that first of all made me nervous to get one, because I was thinking what if it does take me an hour to re-thread the thing every time I need a different color and what if I can't re-thread it at all! Then I would've paid all that money for a useless machine that takes an hour to thread. SOOOO to all those thinking about buying a serger, do it! it will change the way you do business, I'm serious, it will cut hours of time off of sewing projects. And again read the entire instruction manual first and then try threading it, it will be a piece of cake if you know the terminology they're using.
Also don't think you have to spend a lot of money to get a good quality serger. Ebay always has auctions for sergers, there are some good old Pfaff's from the 80's still kicking, as well as some babylock's. Of course if you can afford, the new Babylock's, Pfaff's, Juki's, Bernina's etc, go for it because they're the best, but if you have never owned a serger and you want to get a good beginner model I would go with the Brother 1034d model, I have one and I am absolutely completely happy with it. It's a well priced, 4-3-2 thread, 2 needle model that's simple to thread and surprisingly quiet too. It has tons of good reviews. You can buy them on Amazon, Jo-Ann.com, and various other places.
Off to sewing/designing now.....Gabrielle Knighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720378972458268198noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3343591488735927170.post-69606100589744966512010-02-04T06:57:00.000-08:002010-02-04T07:08:11.644-08:00Here are a few of my favorite things today.

Gray Knitted Top- Ovejanegra.etsy.com

Gauzy White top and embellished white gauzy dress- Aidacoronado.etsy.com

Crystal drop necklace- noemydesigns.etsy.com

Knitted beige and peach dress- Subrosa123.etsy.com

Floral Necklace- Florabond.etsy.com

Pleated Yellow Scarflette- Flutter.etsy.com

Girl Painting (an Ocean Between)- myfolklover.etsy.com

All this and much much more can be found at ETSY!

Gabrielle Knighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720378972458268198noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3343591488735927170.post-43143284560006160772010-02-03T17:27:00.000-08:002010-02-03T17:37:02.842-08:00My prayer for the day.God bless me so that I can bless other people! Use me however, whenever and wherever you want to and may I never exalt myself, only You. God I am nothing, not even a speck of dust, without you, nor would I have breath if you ceased to give it to me. Here are my hands, work through them, and here is my voice, may it speak your mind and heart. May your will be done in my life.
I want everyone to know how amazing your love is God, may this be accomplished!
AMEN!Gabrielle Knighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720378972458268198noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3343591488735927170.post-78817078046963812992010-02-02T13:26:00.000-08:002010-02-03T10:59:30.130-08:00ALTERED COUTURE 3 page spot!!!Some of my work (2 altered, reclaimed pieces) managed to find it's way into the Altered Couture Magazine February 2010 issue!!!! I wrote the Listen up schoool girls article, altered the cardigan, and embellished it as well and also got a gallery spot with my out of dust embellished, reclaimed blouse! SO three pages total, I'm very excited! Somehow God keeps surprising me, opening up new doors, I never know what's going to happen, but He knows and I trust Him :)
The glory all belongs to God :) He gave me the hands to work and the mind to think, so it all goes to Him.
So anyways, that's my preaching for today, here it is!

Gabrielle Knighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720378972458268198noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3343591488735927170.post-12319942392825953312009-10-26T06:04:00.000-07:002009-10-26T06:30:57.754-07:00Learning about God's ways from "My Utmost for His highest" by Oswald ChambersThis passage is from a devotional book called "My Utmost for His highest." It convicts me daily and helps to keep me on the right track.

"When Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples...He departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities." Matthew 11:1

He comes where He commands us to leave. If you stayed home when God told you to go because you were so concerned about your own people there, then you actually robbed them of the teaching of Jesus Christ Himself. When you obeyed and left all the consequences to God, the Lord went into your city to teach, but as long as you were disobedient, you blocked His way. Watch where you begin to debate with Him and put what you call your duty into competition with His commands. If you say "I knowthat He told me to go, but my duty is here," it simply means that you do not believe that Jesus means what He says.
He teaches where He instructs us not to teach.
"Master...let us make three tabernacles..."(Luke 9:33).
Are we playing the part of an amateur providence, trying to play God's role in the lives of others? Are we so noisy in our instruction of other people that God cannot get near them? We must learn to keep our mouths shut and our spirit's alert. God wants to instruct us regarding His Son, and He wants to turn our times of prayer into mounts of transfiguration, (reference Luke 9:33)). When we become certain that God is going to work in a particular way, He will never work in that way again.
He works where He sends us to wait.
"...tarry...until..."(Luke 24:49). "Wait on the Lord" and He will work (Psalm 37:34). But don't wait sulking spiritually and feeling sorry for yourself, just because you can't see one inch in front of you! Are we detached enough from our own spiritual fits of emotion to "wait patiently for Him"? (*37:7). Waiting is not sitting with folded hands doing nothing, but learning to do what we are told.
These are some of the facets of His ways that we rarely recognize.Gabrielle Knighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720378972458268198noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3343591488735927170.post-36245303533235939652009-09-04T07:39:00.000-07:002009-09-04T07:45:57.083-07:00My Sister Had a Baby!! I am enjoying the slightly slower pace of Los Angeles. We currently reside in West Hills with our dogs Auggie and Mops, where I spend time creating in my home studio. I find inspiration and strive to achieve a balance between nature and modern/contemporary design.I have taken the plunge and have devoted myself to ceramics fulltime.

Gabrielle: Where do you get your inspiration from?
Alina: I started finding inspiration from nature and organic forms. Lately I've been inspired by contemporary furniture design. I also like to imagine a piece of pottery as something you would wear. I often think about glaze colors as an outfit that might go together, not sure if that makes sense.

Gabrielle: Do you have a job outside of Etsy?
Alina: About five months ago, I've been fortunate enough to quit my previous office job, and become a fulltime potter. This gave me the oportunity to branch out to local shops and galleries.

Gabrielle: How did you come into your profession?
Alina: It was a complete accident. I majored in illustration in school, and had taken several sculpture classes, but had never tried the wheel. When I moved to Los Angeles, I started taking wheel-throwing classes at a local community center in Burbank, CA. I was so taken by it, I knew that this was something I wanted to pursue almost immediately.

Gabrielle: Is this what you imagined you would be when you grew up? If not, what did you want to be when you were little?
Alina: When I was little I wanted to be a ballerina, an actress, a singer. I wasn't sure which of these dreams would actually come true, but I knew for sure that I would find happiness doing something creative.

Gabrielle: What's your favorite snack/drink to keep you going during a long day?
Alina: Ahhh...coffee is my number one friend. Now that I have the privilige to work from home, I often forget to eat until much later in the day.

Gabrielle: What is your favorite item in your shop?
Alina: Recently it's been my ladybug items. I really enjoy the vibrant colors and the break from the wheel they provide.

Gabrielle: How did you get the idea for your favorite item?
Alina: I was trying to think of something different. I had been working with press molds of flowers and such, and one day I was taking photos of some earrings, and placed them onto a large cala lilly leaf. On that leaf sat a small ladybug, and I thought... perfect!

Gabrielle: If there was one place you could live and money wasn't an option where would it be?
Alina: New York or Paris. I grew up in new york, and recently visited Paris. To live in those cities the way I would want to live, I would need millions of dollars. I've wanted to move to los angles since I was 18, so I would say I am already pretty darn lucky.

Gabrielle: If you had a million dollars how would you spend it?
Alina: Hmmm... If I really had a million dollars, I would pay off my house and invest the rest. If there was no such thing as reality, I would like to buy an apartment in Manhattan. Although a million dollars would probably barely buy you a one bedroom. Haha.

Gabrielle: Do you believe in God? This can be a yes or no, or it can be a more elaborate answer, you can also choose not to answer it, if it is too personal.
Alina: Yes.
Gabrielle: Do you feel like a part of you is visible in all of your work?
Alina: I am not sure. I hope so. People tell me they can. I am working on having a cohesive look. Sometimes I feel my pottery is too all over the place.

Gabrielle: Do you miss items when they sell?
Alina: Sometimes. Depends on the item. If I make an item I really love, I try to hold on to it for a while. After a year or so, I let it go.

Gabrielle: Where is your favorite place to shop on Etsy?
Alina: Thats a tough one.I like looking through the gift guides, but particularly the jewelry on Etsy. I love the jewelry designs of marmar on etsy, and have purchased a couple of pieces. I would love to own one of artisanimpact designs.

Alina also has a blog, check it out to see what she's up to! http://alinahayes.blogspot.com

Thank you Alina for taking the time to do this interview, you really have a gift!
Now here are a few of my favorites from Alina! Now that I'm finally married to a good man, I said a lot of prayers, asking for help, I knew the answer was in front of me. The answer was to feel successful, I just needed some guidance and there it was. I have been attracted to sparkle since I was little (I'd pick the sparkle things off of greeting cards, oops) and I love doing things with my hands so jewelry made sense.
Then I went on to think, IF I succeed, I might be able to get the word out to other confined people, so that they can feel whole. We will have to see what becomes of that.
I'm married with four lovely children and three grandchildren. I help my husband with his company, I watch the grandchildren daily (so my daughters can work their way through college) and in my spare time(HA), I go into my little comfortable world of sparkling jewelry, full of relaxation and imagination.

Gabrielle: Where do you get your inspiration from?

Michele: When I was growing up, I would sit and watch my grandmother and mother with their crochet and knitting needles. I felt a special warmth inside when their projects were completed. I knew it was more than something that they made-a part of them became attached.

Gabrielle: Do you have a job outside of Etsy?

Michele: Yes, I am a bookkeeper, full time grandmother (sitter) to a 6 month old handsome young man named Blake and part time 4 year old blonde beauty named Sarah, she's my ballerina!

Gabrielle: How did you come into your profession?
Michele: I am a Bookkeeper by marriage and a jewelry designer by prayer

Gabrielle: Is this what you imagined you would be when you grew up? If not, what did you want to be when you were little?
Michele: I wanted to be a marine biologist when I was about 8 and in the teens I had a fascination with boutiques.

Gabrielle: What's your favorite snack/drink to keep you going during a long day?
Michele: coca cola and pretzels

Gabrielle: What is your favorite item in your shop?
Michele: Caribbean romance

Gabrielle: How did you get the idea for your favorite item?
Michele: The colors and the sparkle of the sea, combined with my love of vintage rhinestones!

Gabrielle: If there was one place you could live and money wasn't an option where would it be? Michele: Anywhere in a big house with a front porch, an in ground pool and an ocean view...gee I'm not picky.

Gabrielle: If you had a million dollars how would you spend it?
Michele: I'd share most of it with my family (kids), I would not forget the homeless, and I'd really like a spa week if possible.

Gabrielle: Do you believe in God? This can be a yes or no, or it can be a more elaborate answer, you can also choose not to answer it, if it is too personal.
Michele: Yes I believe and so do my children. What a wonderful store Lianne has! I browse through the items and feel like I'm slowly walking back through time. It's romantic and nostalgic with a bit of a modern edge. She uses vintage and new pieces to complete her jewelry and oh the character this jewelry has! Well, I will let her tell her story now... But first here is a sneak peak at her work!

Lianne's Brief Bio: Born July 6th
I'm a Registered Nurse working full time in a hospital in Indianapolis. Grew up in the city and am now living the peaceful life out in the country! I love primitive antiques, my house was built in 1896 and is filled with them! All functional, I might add! I love to work in my garden, curl up with a good book, make jewelry and play with my dogs! I'm drawn to anything that is old, worn, and well loved! Basically, I enjoy the simple things in life!

Gabrielle: Where do you get your inspiration from?
Lianne: My inspiration actually comes from the random pieces of jewelry, bits and baubles themselves! It may sound strange but they "tell" me how they should be used and with what they should be paired!

Gabrielle: Do you have a job outside of Etsy?
Lianne: I work full time as a Registered Nurse in a hospital in Indianapolis.

Gabrielle: How did you come into your profession?
Lianne: When I was a little girl, I always wanted to be a Veterinarian. I was accepted into Vet school, then one day during my senior year in High School-"I want to be a nurse" popped into my head. I had never even been in a hospital, never been around sick people, didn't know any nurses--so maybe it was a "calling"!

Gabrielle: Is this what you imagined you would be when you grew up? If not, what did you want to be when you were little?
Lianne: Answered above.

Gabrielle: What's your favorite snack/drink to keep you going during a long day?
Lianne: Coffee and Mountain Dew

Gabrielle: What is your favorite item in your shop?
Lianne: I don't really have a favorite--If I don't love what I'm making, then I don't make it.

Gabrielle: How did you get the idea for your favorite item?
Lianne: See Above.

Gabrielle: She loves all of them equally and it's easy to see why!

Gabrielle: If there was one place you could live, and money wasn't an option, where would it be?

Lianne: I'm completely happy right where I am! If I had to choose, maybe someplace where it's warm all the time! I hate cold weather.

Gabrielle: If you had a million dollars how would you spend it?
Lianne: I would probably keep enough so I wouldn't have to worry about money, and give the rest away to people who needed it!

Gabrielle: Do you believe in God? This can be a yes or no, or it can be a more elaborate answer, you can also choose not to answer it, if it is too personal.
Lianne: I believe that there is something or someone much greater than all of us! It is so evident in everything around us!

Gabrielle: Do you feel like a part of you is visible in all of your work?
Lianne: Most definitely! I put my heart and soul into each piece of jewelry I create. Sometimes it takes me forever to make one piece, it has to be "just right"!

Gabrielle: Do you miss items when they sell?
Lianne: Not really--I'm always pleased when I sell something and know that someone else has fallen in love with something I've made! That's my goal, to create beautiful jewelry from antique and vintage bits and baubles, and keep the history of these things moving forward, hopefully to be passed on to the next generation.

Gabrielle: Where is your favorite place to shop on Etsy?

Lianne: There are so many wonderful and talented people on Etsy, but I currently do most of my shopping in the Vintage and Antique section.

Gabrielle: A big thank you to Lianne for taking the time to do this interview!
